LECTUREr

A regular at the Metropolitan Opera, and a 2019 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions winner, Miles Mykkanen has garnered recognition on the world’s concert and operatic stages for his “focused, full-voiced tenor” (New York Times). Lauded as one of classical music’s rising stars, Mykkanen is captivating as a cabaret performer with a theatrical flair and a singular approach to song. For his debut at the Neue Galerie’s Cabaret at Café Sabarsky, Mykkanen will present a searing overview of the turbulent 1920s in song and story.

Film Series

BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ

Directed by Burhan Qurbani (2020), In German; English subtitles. 183 min.

Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz is considered one of the most important works of the Weimar Republic and was named among the top 100 books of all time by 100 writers in 2002. In his rough and neon-sign colored take on Döblin’s classic, director Burhan Qurbani reimagines the main character Franz Biberkopf as an undocumented immigrant from Guinea Bissau who struggles to make a new life for himself in Berlin. After surviving a dangerous journey from Africa, Francis strives to be a good man, but soon realizes how difficult it is to be righteous while undocumented in Germany. He enters a raw downward spiral into the dark underworld of Berlin.
