Vienna 1938. As Nazi troops march into the city, Josef Bartok hastily tries to escape overseas with his wife, but is arrested by the Gestapo. Refusing to cooperate on confidential information he holds, he is sentenced to solitary confinement. Bartok remains steadfast for weeks and months but eventually becomes increasingly desperate – until a chess book lands in his hands and helps him to overcome the mental suffering before it turns into a dangerous obsession.
