Egon schiele: living landscapes

Christian bauer, curator

Nature was undoubtedly the great love of Egon Schiele’s life. Reflections of nature play a significant role in his work. Still a boy, Schiele began his art with landscapes, which comprise the largest group in his oeuvre overall. The lecture explores the different meanings of landscapes and cityscapes in Schiele's work, highlighting their connections to his portraits and self-portraits. In this process, Schiele intertwines the landscape with the human being and vice versa, a symbolism that pervades nearly all phases of his career.
