Based on the theater play by Ödön von Horváth, the films tells the fate of a young woman named Marianne, who breaks off her reluctant engagement with Oskar the butcher after falling in live with the shady gambler Alfred. They become a couple and have a baby, but Alfred soon gets bored and leaves them. Without means to support herself, her downfall begins.
